I love yogurt. Especially Greek yogurt. I went to a conference in Greece and had the opportunity to eat some of the best I’ve ever eaten…drizzled with a bit of honey it was delightful. But a new thing has been marketed lately and it kinda bugs me: non-dairy yogurt. How in God’s name do you make non-dairy yogurt? Turns out that it is made from fermented nut “milks” such as almond milk and others. Milk, by definition, is the product of a lactating female mammal. Last I knew, almonds and other nuts are not mammals so, how can products extracted from them be called milk? The USDA has decided to crack down on this mis-labeling of nut juice as milk. The nut industry is fighting back, understandably, stating that people are more likely to buy almond “milk” or soy “milk” not almond nut juice. But, the problem still exists – milk comes from mammals and isn’t pressed from a pecan or an almond. What do you think?
